Malina, Neo, and the Ultimate Lie
Why Malina’s world might have more to do with The Matrix and The Truman Show than with fantasy.
When readers ask me what Malina’s world can be compared to, the same names of well-known masterpieces almost always come up: Momo, The Little Prince, or The NeverEnding Story.
Not once has anyone asked: Is Malina actually Neo? Yet, I’ve come to find this exact question incredibly fascinating.
The other day, I was browsing through one of my old notebooks again. One of many, very many. Tucked between story ideas, drawings, and half-finished projects, the same blocking thoughts kept appearing: Not yet. Maybe later. I’m not good enough for this.
Eventually, I had to laugh because I suddenly realized: That is my very own Matrix. It doesn’t take machines, sinister agents, or a red pill.
Sometimes, a set of a few stubborn sentences disguised as absolute truth in everyday life is more than enough.
That’s why I see the science fiction classic The Matrix quite differently today than I used to. The real villain isn’t Agent Smith.
The true opponent in life is that single, paralyzing thought: Who am I to even try?
That is precisely where Malina’s journey begins in my book. The plot isn’t about fighting classic dragons, nasty monsters, or dark mages, but about fighting the inner perception of being smaller than you truly are.
And that’s also why I often think of the movie drama The Truman Show while writing.
Truman Burbank gradually discovers that other people are staging his entire life. Most of us experience something very similar in reality, just much more subtle. For years, you play the sensible one, the conformist, or the person who supposedly has everything under control.
This works perfectly fine until you suddenly pause and ask yourself: Wait a minute, who actually handed me this script? And even more importantly: Why am I still playing along?
Perhaps that’s why Malina’s world isn’t about sorcery or conventional magic at all. Perhaps, at its core, it’s much more about waking up. About the exact moment you stop believing every word of the old, negative stories you’ve been telling yourself.
Here is my favorite provocation to close with:
In real life, most people don’t even need a red pill to see the truth. They have known for a long time exactly which story is artificially keeping them small. They have simply repeated these sentences in their heads so many times that they are now firmly convinced it is their actual personality.
Or to put it another way: Maybe you aren’t trapped in a foreign Matrix at all. Maybe you are just the fanfiction of your own self-doubt.
If you are ready to rewrite your own script and are looking for literary parables like Momo or The Little Prince with modern depth, then join Malina on her journey of awakening.
